Jet Set Chic | Holiday Travel Tips
Whether you’re traveling to see family, jetting off to an exotic locale, or both, this is the busiest travel time of the year. In preparation, we tapped our creative consultant Michaela Lee (who travels EVERYWHERE!) for tips to stay comfy, cozy, and chic at once!
1. A knit trick. Most of us traveling for the holidays, are going from a colder climate to a warmer one, but even if you are traveling from cold to cold, you want to stay cozy on the plane. For me, it’s always too cold, which is why I always love to travel in a sweater coat. It never wrinkles, it can double as a blanket, and it’s cozy chic.
2. Have a spritzer! As most anyone who travels knows, it’s so important to keep hydrated—especially on longer flights. Drinking water is the obvious essential, but another trick is a light spritz now and then. Muji makes a travel aluminum atomizer; it is perfect to fill with a little mineral water and maybe a few drops of your favorite toner to give yourself a light blast in front of your face. It sort of humidifies the air. Note: depending on how grumpy your neighbor looks, you might want to do this in the bathroom.
3. Book it. I love to read. I will always have a few books with me while on vacation, but sometimes you donʼt want to lose yourself in a novel, you want to be present and enjoy your surroundings. I always try to find a book on the region I’m traveling to. Whether it be fictional or historical, it always brings another level to the adventure of discovering a new place. I also love to bring along a collection of short stories—it’s easier to put down. I recently have been reading The Best of Roald Dahl, it is witty, funny, and slightly dark.
4. Do your research. If traveling to someplace new or a foreign country, it always pays to be a little prepared. Learn the basics of the language, hello and thank you being the minimum, but also find out the specialties of the region: the top spa, the chicest hotel. For me, the best vacations incorporates the best of all worlds. I want to eat what the locals eat, but I also want to experience a touch of luxury wherever I go!
5. Say cheese! Always bring a camera. Although I’ve never been good at snapping tons of photos, I have never regretted the photos I do have. I happen to be in love with my camera, a Canon PowerShot S95. It’s small and compact and perfect for low light photos. Impossible to take a bad photo, and perfect for moonlit walks, candlelight dinner, or wild nights at the club.
6. Pack something glamorous. Of course it depends on length of the trip and where you are going, but I always bring at least two options. Whether it’s a garment, a fabulous piece of jewerly, or an impossibly sexy pair of shoes. Just to shake things up a bit and make you feel like you are living in a fantasy—even if they never even make it out of your room…
